Google is tightening YouTube’s rules on the distribution of content related to gambling, digital assets, and social casinos.
Google has announced further tightening of rules for uploading and distributing content related to gambling and gaming. From 17 November, new restrictions for streamers and content creators will come into force on its subsidiary platform YouTube.
In addition to the existing ban on broadcasting classic and popular online casinos or real-money gambling, content related to social casinos, video game skins, and NFTs will also be restricted in the future.
Anyone who streams or uploads gambling and gaming content on YouTube will have to comply with a number of additional restrictions starting in November. The platform is adapting its guidelines to new digital developments and introducing stricter rules to better control the handling of sensitive content.
In future, this will also include content involving digital goods with real monetary value. This includes so-called skins and cosmetic items from video games as well as NFTs, i.e. digital collectibles that are unique and can be traded. YouTube also wants to regulate those forms of digital gambling where no traditional stakes are involved but real value is created.
In addition, social casino games that simulate real gambling without using real money will be subject to age restrictions in future. They will remain permitted, but may only be viewed by viewers of legal age. The aim of the new guidelines is to define gambling mechanics more clearly and to better protect young users.
Google had only updated and tightened its community guidelines regarding gambling content in March. At that time, YouTube introduced a comprehensive package of measures aimed primarily at real-money offers and misleading advertising.
Content that referred to online casinos or gambling apps without Google’s approval was banned. This also included direct or indirect links to such platforms.
In addition, all videos that showed or promoted real gambling were automatically given an age restriction of 18+. As a result, many channels lost the ability to monetise their content.
With these steps, YouTube wanted to improve the protection of viewers from illegal offers and manipulative gambling advertising.
